Spain is the main exporter of wine in volume, but not in value

The most sold products outside our borders are those of lower categories: those with a lower price.

Spain is the largest exporter of wine if we talk about volume. The problem is that the products most come are those that have a lower price. For this reason, the Interprofessional Organization of Wine of Spain (OIVE) has launched a plan designed by the consultancy KPMG that aims to convert the wine sector into a national and international benchmark.

“Bringing the wine sector to even greater heights of excellence, quality, reference and value in the world” is the objective of OIVE. Spain is the main exporter of wine in volume, but not in value.  The most sold products outside our borders are those of lower categories: those that have a lower price.

“We are the cheapest country compared to any other exporting country,” they say. Therefore, the International Wine Organization of Spain has presented a strategic plan with defined objectives that will make Spanish wine acquire greater value.

“We want to achieve a market share of 10% in value internationally, which currently exceeds slightly 8%,” they say, a growth target in the domestic market of 3%.

If this is fulfilled, exports will have a greater weight. From KPMG explain that we would achieve 1,200 million euros of additional export

Its application is for five years. It will be under continuous review and each operator must apply it in the relevant parts. It will also focus on sustainability and promote wine as part of the Mediterranean diet.
