New fire in southern France devastates 500 hectares of forest and vineyard
About 500 firefighters fight Tuesday to control a new fire in southern France, which burned about 500 hectares of forest and vineyards, and forced the evacuation of a town, local officials said.
The residents of Aumelas, 20 kilometers west of Montpellier, had to leave their homes because of the proximity of the flames, stimulated by the wind.
“In total, there are about 500 firefighters deployed,” supported by two fire fighters, local authorities said in a statement.
The region, already affected last week by another fire, is at “high” and “very high” risk of fires due to months of drought and high temperatures.
2,000 firefighters had to be mobilized in the last few days to control the two huge fires near Bordeaux, southwest, which destroyed more than 20,000 hectares of forest.
