2022 harvest starts two weeks early in several communities
Two weeks earlier than last year, the Regulatory Council of DOCa Rioja has disseminated its first report with results of the sampling of the monitoring of the ripening of grapes in the Denomination.
As usual, this first maturation bulletin only collects data from vineyards in Rioja Oriental, where an advance of almost two weeks is estimated over the previous season. This advance is fundamentally marked by the outstanding evolution of Tempranillo and Tempranillo Blanco grapes.
The health and vegetative state of the vineyard are very good. Some specific areas are observed with symptoms of water stress and heat stroke, especially in Gratian plots; however, in general terms, maturation is not being conditioned.
The weight of the berry is lower than last year in all varieties, and less compact clusters are observed. The Control Body of the Regulatory Council now pays special attention to the evolution of acidity and pH as well as phenolic maturity, which show correct initial values.
These conclusions were included in the first Maturation Bulletin published by the Regulatory Council in 2022. The body will extend its analysis of maturation to the whole of the Denomination in the coming weeks, offering a service that allows winegrowers to determine the ideal date of harvest in each locality and thus optimize the quality of the fruit and wines produced.
